The Heart Foundation is a charity dedicated to fighting the single biggest killer of Australians – heart disease. For over 50 years, they’ve led the battle to save lives and improve the heart health of all Australians. Their vision is a world where people don’t suffer or die prematurely because of heart disease.
Fiona had been suffering a persistent cough for weeks and was breathless, doctors initially put the symptoms down to having a thyroid problem, but was later diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy at age just 34 years of age shortly after the birth of her daughter. She underwent emergency heart surgery to repair a faulty valve due to her enlarged heart.
Fiona has since adopted an exercise program to manage her condition including weekly sessions of cross fit and running, challenging herself every day. As Fiona says “If my heart was not going to improve then I have to be the best version of me physically that I can be so that it doesn’t have to work as hard. I have lost the weight I gained back through healthy whole foods eating and am exercising regularly.”
She’s also participating in this year’s heart Foundation MyMarathon to raise vital funds to help support the work of the Heart Foundation. As Fiona says “I am very keen to support the Heart Foundation, the rehab programs and literature available after surgery were great in supporting my recovery and I would like to see that continue.”
Research is vital in helping people like Fiona, as donations are vital in supporting funding new advances in treatment, diagnosis, procedures and prevention. To find out more go to www.heartfoundation.org.au
Right now, 1.4 million Australians are living with it, and each year more than 55,000 Australians will have a heart attack. You can help change that.
As a charity the Heart Foundation relies on the community to fund vital research, develop guidelines for health professionals, support patient care and help Australians to live healthier active lifestyles.
